STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford residents will soon be able to learn how to dance like the stars when three professionals from ABC’s hit TV show open Dance with Me Studio on April 16.

The Stamford location is the fourth in the chain and the first in Connecticut started by Tony Dovolani, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Valentin Chmerkovskiy and their partners. The other studios are in Ridgefield, N.J., Long Island, N.Y., and Soho, N.Y., Dance with Me Studios' website said.

“I can’t wait to give my neighbors and friends a chance to experience the best in ballroom dance from our studio!” Dovolani, a Fairfield County resident, said in a press release.

A variety of services will be offered at the studio, including private lessons, group classes and dance fitness. The instructors have been trained by the partners, and have been chosen because of their ability to get the best out of their students, the release said.

Dance With Me: 'Dancing With the Stars' pros bring ballroom training to Stamford

Though much of their time is spent training celebrities how to glide across the dance floor on the hugely popular TV series "Dancing With the Stars," the owners of ballroom studio chain Dance With Me, which opens in Stamford next week, are committed to the teaching profession.

"It's not one of those businesses where we endorse it and have nothing to do with it," said Valentin Chmerkovskiy, a newer cast member on DWTS and a co-owner of Dance With Me. "It's our place of work and our place of inspiration."

Chmerkovskiy and his partners, brother and DWTS veteran Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and pro Tony Dovolani, a former Stamford resident, will open their fourth studio on Monday ­-- just a month after the trio appeared in the new season premiere of "Dancing With the Stars."

In preparation for their latest venture, the Chmerkovskiys and Dovolani met with Mayor Michael Pavia and reached out to Signature Group, a Darien-based commercial real estate firm, to find a location for the studio, which specializes in Latin and Ballroom styles of dance. Dance With Me will be based on the previously vacant top floor of the building at 20 Summer St., which also houses the Riviera Maya restaurant.

"What they were interested in is an area that has a lot of vibrancy," Bob Gillon, president of Signature Group, said. "We focused on downtown Stamford because it's very international, very cosmopolitan. We wanted to reposition that building into a higher-end building, and this is a good way to start that."

The trio has been in the world of professional ballroom dancing since they were teenagers, and trace their partnership back long before they began performing on DWTS. The owners said they hope the popularity of the show will entice a variety of clients.

"With the popularity of `Dancing With the Stars' and how far ballroom has come as a form of exercise for men and women, I think it's going to attract a wide range of clientele," Maksim Chmerkovskiy said. "We're not targeting one group, we're open to everybody."

Dance With Me opened its first studio in New Jersey in 2005, and has since expanded to locations on Long Island and in New York City's Soho neighborhood. The trio plans to open another location in Los Angeles in the near future.

Stamford was chosen, in part, because of Dovolani's connection with the city.

Born in Kosovo, Dovolani came to the United States in his teens and spent time living in Stamford and training at the Fred Astaire Dance Academy. He also worked at the Parkway Diner on High Ridge Road.

In light of his accolades and the popularity of "Dancing With the Stars," Dovolani expressed eagerness to bring his experience back to the community.

"I feel like I'm going back home," Dovolani said. "I want to make sure this studio becomes extremely successful. I'm so excited because Connecticut deserves a great level of training. What better way to exercise than learning how to dance? You're dancing, but it's also like having a personal trainer."

Sleepless in Stamford

Hey everybody,

I was getting a little frustrated with twitter, I can only tweet 140 characters at a time, and most of you just follow me because I post cute pictures like this with witty captions like, “Step into my office…” What you all seem to forget is that I am the fly on wall, and by wall, I mean dance floor. Some of you skeptics (felines) may ask, ”But Sleep, how can you hear?” Well, I can read minds, and by minds, I mean lips. There are really exciting things going on at Dance With Me, and it would probably be in your best interest to know about them. . . just barking. Dance With Me Stamford is open for business! It’s honestly the nicest ballroom dance studio Stamford or this dog have ever seen. We share a parking lot with the movie theater on Summer St, and we are a treat’s throw away from a dozen great restaurants. Everyone seems to be really excited about our arrival, so get ready to ballroom dance your tails off!
